Vivian attended the prestigious design school Esmod in Paris, France. Upon graduating from Esmod, she went on to do design work for a small fashion house in Paris.

At one point in her career Vivian worked in Hong Kong where she led a design team that produced garments for a German department store.

Hi! I'm Cee from Coco and Vera. I'm a Vancouver-based style blogger with a passion for all things Parisian. I'm so excited to be guest blogging for Bellissima this month. I paid a visit to their South Granville boutique in Vancouver to see their spring collections and the first thing that caught my eye was a ruby red trench coat from Solo Moda.

Time for a confession: When I was little, I watched Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? every day after school. Carmen Sandiego was a glamourous, enigmatic heroine, so elusive that she was almost never seen except from behind, as she was escaping capture. She inspired my fascination with travel, and she inspired my style; I've had a fondness for red trench coats and fedoras ever since. I think I could almost convincingly pull off a career as an international criminal mastermind in this coat. Not that I would want to - at least, not forever :)

In all seriousness, when it comes to glamour, you can't top this trench.

Bellissima is a family run company. Tell me a bit more aboutthat. How and why did you decide to build the company and what was theexperience of starting a familyrun company like?

I had a vision to own a chain of ladies wear stores in my early teens. I felt such joy and confidence when I was well presented. I wanted to share this feeling with more women. Growing up in my family, I felt women are considered insignificant. Too many times I was told girls are useless. When I told my family about my dream they just laughed at me. I graduated from University of British Columbia in 1971. I worked in the Ladies wear department at Robert Simpson's in Toronto. The interviewer asked me at the time why a university graduate would want to be a salesgirl. I told her "I'm going to own a chain of ladies wear stores one day. I have to start some place to gain experience". She also laughed at me all the time. I guess this was not the first time she had heard this. I finally had the opportunity to venture into my own business in 1973. I had a failed attempt as an importer. Collecting money was a major problem. My husband and I decided to venture into retail. Our first store was opened in May of 1975. I have been living my dream ever since.

What has been Bellissima’s greatest success?

Bellissima's greatest success is the team of great women and men working in the company. We have such passion for fashion and to make our customers look great. We are proud of our products. We also have many local customers.

I know you do the buying for your own stores. Tell me a bitabout this experience. How do you decide what to buy? How do you find brandsthat fit the Bellissima aesthetic?

Over the years I have worked with numerous suppliers, I tried to find lines with good workmanship and fit, and also suppliers that will stand behind their products. Every line depends on their designer, merchandiser, pattern maker and quality control. Any slip in any of these departments will effect the selling of the line. This is why I change my lines constantly, but my focus is the same. I have to find beautifully made clothes with great fit that make a fashion statement. I am always looking for elements of what is interesting at the moment in fashion. The clothes must be accessible to my customers.

What labels do you carry?

Joseph Ribkoff, Frank Lyman, Conrad C Dolcezza. I am constantly trying out new lines and dropping lines that no longer work for our customers.

Bellissima has it’s own, in house label - Who designs forthe label and how do you come up with the inspirations for the designs?

We develop our private label by travelling to major cities like Paris, Milan, Rome, London and New York. We spot colour trends and new looks. We like to have merchandise that is exclusive to Bellissima only. Now, we also have our in house designer Vivian Wong, who does her own research to come up with new looks. She was trained in Paris and has been a designer for a lot of boutiques in Vancouver. Her designs are doing very well in our stores, and they are all made in Vancouver.

What trends can we expect to see at Bellissima for S/S?

Bellissima means Beautiful in Italian. We want to emphasize the femininity of the female body. We are proud of our assets and our look no matter what our size and age. Colours bring in different energy and vibration to our body. There are lots of vibrant colours and prints this spring.

Why is keeping things local important to Bellissima? How doyou keep it local?

My focus is to bring beautiful clothes to our customers. By keeping productions local we can turn around new designs in 1/3 of the time. We are providing local employment and helping the overall economy. We have been doing this for over 20 years.

What are you doing to keep your company current?

I am open to view new lines all the time. We take trips to Europe, New York and Los Angeles a few times a year.

What is your favourite piece in stores right now?

There are too many favourite items in the stores. I am bringing in new looks and new ideas all the time. Different silhouettes suit different body types. Our staff are experts in this area. I love the skinny pant or legging with tunic tops. We are dressing more relaxed these days. Comfort is a major factor. Knit jackets and cardigans are more comfortable than woven jackets. We have knitted co-ordinate looks that are professional looking.

What do you love about working in the fashion industry?

I love working in the fashion industry. I am a visual person and I have a very good visual memory. I am good with forms and shapes; this is the area that I am good at. Fashion is always stimulating and changing, there is never a dull moment. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to assist with women's wardrobes over the years. I hope Bellissima played a small part in their success and happiness.

What inspires your own style?

My own style is from my selections for Bellissima. It is the culmination of my work and passion.

Turtlenecks are a big hit this fall and winter, so of course I had to wear this mod mini dress/tunic! I love that it balances out the high neckline with a shorter skirt. For the coolers months ahead, turtlenecks look great under layers, so pile on the vests, cardigans, sweaters, dresses, and mini skirts over top this tunic! While out and about, I felt like I was wearing two outfits because this jacket looks almost like a dress when it’s buttoned up. I absolutely adore the shape!

We just had our 4th semi annual fashion show....held in our Bellissima Lonsdale store last night. Many of the clients that attended expressed to me that they really liked that "real women" modeled the clothes. We used our own staff to show how great everyone can look....regardless of height, body type, age or whatever women feel their area of concern is.

The Black Pant

Not just a pair of black pants. For you ladies who work in the corporate environment you know that dressing to work does not need to be a boring task. These black dress pants are amazing! They can easily be worn dressed up or dressed down. Here I decided to wear them when a striped sweater and wedge heels. My favourite part about these pants is the pleats around the pockets. Such a fun detail!

My other favourite part of this outfit is the Anne B. Accessories wood bracelet. Anne Corpuz-Bacalso was one of the emerging designers from Alberta Fashion Week. FASHION AND PHILANTHROPY

I Love a company that partners the ideals and desire to "give back" with beautiful things such as great fashion.

Philanthropy is the desire to improve the lives of others through monetary or physical donations and other charitable actions.

As most of us know October is Breast Cancer awareness month, and Bellissima has been involved as an organization to try and do our part and "give back".

This year a few of our Vancouver stores worked on raising over $3800.00 through silent auctions and a portion of their sales for the day.

We got our customers involved through a calling campaign to invite them to come down and support this fundraiser.....many thanks to all of you.

I would also like to say thank you to all our managers, staff and local merchants that have so generously donated to this cause as well as to our head office for their support.

How amazing are these images from Coco Rocha's new jewellery line benefiting human trafficking victims in Cambodia. The Vancouver native enlisted her supermodel friends to help her with the campaign and if we can say so the results are amazing. We love seeing Canadians doing so great and leading by example on the world stage and especially in the fashion industry. Kudos to Coco!

From Style.com: 'Coco Rocha essentially took this season off in terms of the runway, walking exclusively for Zac Posen in New York and Giorgio Armani in Milan. But Rocha was far from out of service during fashion month. She’s been hard at work putting the final touches on her forthcoming documentary Letters to Haiti (making its New York City debut next month at Milk Studios) and crafting a line of jewelry for Senhoa, due out tomorrow on Senhoa.org. The collection ($65 to $995), which benefits victims of human trafficking in Cambodia by giving them job opportunities, is all handcrafted by a survivor of exploitation. “Once I heard the extent of the problem with human trafficking in Cambodia I knew I had to help,” Rocha told Style.com.

To show off her range of gunmetal and Swarovski necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, Rocha enlisted pal Behati Prinsloo to model alongside her in a new cinemagraph campaign by Jamie Beck, debuting exclusively here on Style.com. (For her print campaign, she also brought her friends into the picture—Iman and Caroline Trentini both appear with her in the Nigel Barker-lensed photos.)“I first met Behati at a Louis Vuitton after-party in 2006 and we were instant friends,” Rocha says. “We feel like we went to model high school together so it’s always like a happy reunion when we get together.”

Jackets are one of my favorites parts of my wardrobe. For me, a great coat is the finishing touch to any outfit. This coat came in a few different neutral colours but the orange caught my eye. When fall hits I can’t get enough of orange, burgundy and army green. Lions Lace Lattes: Cashmere Leopard

Hello! I’m Ashley, and I write for the blog, Lions Lace Lattes. I am so excited to be guest posting for Bellissima for October and November. Bellissima has always been the go to store for the perfect party dress, but after seeing the edgy, rocker outfits created by Jennie Lyle at Alberta Fashion Week, I realized that Bellissima has a lot more to offer than graduation and Christmas party attire. I was so inspired by the looks from fashion week in March, when I was asked to create outfits for the Bellissima blog, I jumped at the chance.

Sweaters are an autumn essential, and perfect for those transitional fall days where the afternoons are warmer, but the evenings are cooling off. I noticed this light-weight cashmere sweater at Bellissima right away, and knew I had to wear it. I love the soft, fuzzy texture... and the leopard - need I say more. I decided to pair it with a leather skirt, black pumps, a yellow belt to pull out the colour in the sweater, and a jean jacket to dress the look down.

Reading Room: Bringing Home The Birkin

I was at an Hermes event not too long ago and the luxury of it all reminded me and inspired to revisit one of my favourite books. Michael Tonello devised a system to acquire and re-sell one of the most coveted and most expensive bags in the world. He ran a lucrative business selling the bag (and other Hermes goods) on ebay while everyone else has been waitlisted. The company creates demand for the bag by making it accessible to only a few, 'deserved' clients, decreasing it's mass reach, but ironically also amplifying it's appeal (think limited edition that never ends).The story he goes on to tell, takes you around the world in search of the infamous Birkin bag named after the bautiful Jane Birkin. The best part of the book is that it is entirely non-fictional. Every aspiring fashionista should have this book in her posession.

Some exciting news for Bellissima this week. As we are coming into fall we decided to put a little spin on things, give you more perspective and let our blog be the platform for other bloggers around the country to share their Bellissima fashion inspirations. The first blogger we chose to feature on the site is Ashley Pettigrew, her blog, Lions Lace and Lattes has gotten much recognition in Calgary as well as on the International scale. She has just come back from the Independent Fashion Bloggers conference in New York City during Fashion Week (if you remember Bellissima was at that conference last year). Ashley's style is classic but trendy with a little hippie chic twist. We love the way she balances her professional life with her online persona. In the current age of technology, very few artists have the opportunity to create a lasting legacy. Too few and far between are bands and artists like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Elvis. Perhaps it’s a matter of the industry being too geared towards what is ‘new’ and ‘in’, or perhaps it can be lent to the fact that bands nowadays put out an album every 2-4 years, when the Beatles released all 12 of their albums within the span of 7. Whatever the reason, it’s no easy task naming a band that has really had a measurable effect on the past decade in the same way other bands affected the 60’s and 70’s. If there was, however, one band which has had consistent, lasting success for the past decade, with every indication that their music could conceivably live on beyond their own existence as a group, it would have to be Coldplay. Now, I dare not compare them to a band like the Beatles, (for comparing anyone to a band such as that is a surefire way to bring the ire of many music fans) but they are very likely the closest thing our generation may ever see in terms of lasting success. For years they have been making an exceedingly grandiose blend of brit rock and pop music, and while they have diligently tweaked the theme between every album, they have developed a distinct sound which carries on and lets you know every time they appear on the radio that ‘hey, this is Coldplay.’ Each of their four albums has gone number one and multi-platinum, and with their latest release coming October 24th, you can surely expect it to do just the same.

Sarah Slean has a new album coming out September 27th, and for those unfamiliar with her work I implore you to stop at the next chance you get and discover all that you can of her. Over the course of a nearly 13 year career, Sarah has worked with many notable fellow-canadians, including her performance of “If You Could Read My Mind” with Blue Rodeo frontman Jim Cuddy at this year’s Juno awards. Her music is rich with soul and inspired by folk, cabaret, jazz, and everything in between. On top of that, she’s been nominated for a handful of Juno and Gemini awards. Some of the films represented include a refreshing take on the classic Cinderella fairy tale (Angela Houston Ever After); seventeenth century Virginia (Colin Farrell, The New World); the eighteenth-century England of the aristocracy (Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes, The Duchess); the first voyage in the Pirates adventure trilogy (Johnny Depp, The Pirates of the Caribbean; Curse of the Black Pearl); the fantastic and opulent nineteenth-century Paris (Emmy Rossum, The Phantom of the Opera) the story of Peter Pan (Kate Winslet, Finding Neverland) and the new adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude LawSherlock Holmes).

Go ahead and squeal — these costumes have touched the very skin of stars such as Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman. In fact, the exhibition reads like a textile-based "who's who" of Hollywood — lanky Nicole Kidman next to tiny Renee Zellweger next to curvy Scarlett Johansson.

Cut! also allows the viewer to appreciate the fine details of costumes that often only appear fleetingly in the final film. The attention to detail in the research, design and creation of these film costumes crosses the line from craft to couture.

Fashion and film become fine art in this exciting exhibition. All 43 costumes were made by the renowned British costumer, Cosprop Ltd., and many have won major film awards for costume design, including the coveted Oscar™.

Time is flying in the world of fashion. Today we shot the new campaign for Bellissima's Fall/Winter collection. As usual I am amazed at the turn around of these things. Before we have a chance to fully start enjoying the season a close end is marked with the selection of images for the winter windows. In Fall you can expect big changes at Bellissima, the stores are getting revamped and the logo is undergoing a transformation. Like all things, the company is growing and exploring new directions and avenues for exposure. We are very excited to announce our new addition to the Bellissima family, Maggie, from IModel Management here in Calgary, she was a pleasure to work with. As usual the rest of the magnificent team was present, Jennie Lyle did the styling, Alicja Wilkosz did maekup, Jereme Bokitch from HedKandi maned the hair. Ania B from Sophia Models International came back again as one of the models, this time. Shea Kerwood was our creative director and Jason Eng shot the vision into a cohesive image. To witness a photoshoot from the beginning stages to the final product is quite an amazing thing to watch. We hope you enjoy the sneak peek of our day with Bellissima and can't wait to show you the full campaign, as well as the lookbook, which was also shot last week. Stay Tuned!

Calgary Stampede 2011 Royal Style

Let’s throw up our white cowboy hats and say welcome to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The Calgary Stampede takes place once a year, since 1886, over the course of ten days in July, which attracts millions of people from all over the world to participate in the festivities. This ten day event which runs July 8th through the 17th, includes rodeos, parades, live country music, good food and good company. This year Prince William and his wife, Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge will be making their first royal engagement as a married couple on a trip to Canada.

Catherine was recently spotted leaving Lock & Co. Hatters, causing much speculation about what she will be wearing to the stampede. Lock & Co. Hatters, an institution specializing in hats, has praised the Duchess for her “impeccable taste.” Established in 1676, the store is still around on St. James Street in London, and caters to perfecting the fit of a hat for both men and women. When I was a young girl studying and working at the House of Worth, I would gaze into the windows and be transfixed by the astonishing way hats were made by hand. I was excited to hear that she was seen there and am also speculating if either of them will be wearing a hat made by Lock & Co. to the Calgary Stampede; perhaps one of their famous Stetson hats. Or a hat by Sylvia Fletcher's Couturier Millinery line, exclusive to Lock & Co.

When the couple lands at Calgary airport on July 7th, they will be honored with a White Hat Ceremony which has become a tradition for all well-known people who visit Canada. During this tradition Prince William and his wife will be presented with white cowboy hats. And with her love of hats and fascinators, I’m anxious to see what else she has up her sleeve to wow us.

I hope that the couple has an amazing time on their tour through Canada. Maybe Kate will stop by Bellissima, which has its flagship store right in Calgary. As she loves fashion that’s affordable and on trend. She has such a perfect figure, but how can she not be tempted by the traditional pancake breakfast at the Calgary Stampede.

Starting with a white canvas...

Someone once asked me to define white. After quite some time, I decided to do some research on the subject. I found this, “The basic compound for reflection of color is white. In other terms, white strikes us as a deep and absolute silence" said by Wassily Kandinsky author of Concerning the Spiritual in Art.

You should think of a white outfit as your own personal canvas to enhance your image. Now that we’re in the first stages of summer, I would hope that you have gone through your jewelry boxes and drawers, where your summer favorites are hiding. Sort out the pieces that mean something to you and anything long place on a hook in your dressing room. Any colored bangles or cuffs, keep readily accessible. Those long earrings or clip-ons that have special meaning can now be kept near your lipstick or bronzers. Your belts hung next to your chains, and your summer hats should be steamed and stuffed with tissue to bring back the shape. Many of our purchases should be spontaneous and not necessarily just a trend of the moment. The scarf we once used to cover ourselves , can now be used as a fabulous accessory.


So I give you our white canvas and these are some of my suggestions:



Some of us prefer silver to gold and with gold popular this season, paler than seasons past, it’s great to mix long or short chains in either of the color. Wear alone for a cleaner look or with white long beads to add to make a different mood. All metal jewelry looks great depending on your preference.


Women I style, I always desire something BOLD. A great necklace or a fabulous cuff is a great investment piece especially if it has something white in it and you want a summery feel. Tribal influenced costume jewelry creates a fashionable look as wood and horn make a statement and your look becomes your own.


There is bright white and milky white and this is where I suggest nude accents. Mother of pearl is timeless, pearls any size any length. In having accessory fashion events there will always be a mannequin covered in pearls. I always smile to myself that a variety of women are attracted to this area, after all Audrey Hepburn will never go out of style. Diamonds shine even more when wearing white whilst chunky brights gives one a feeling of Latin Passion.


I would say that turquoise and coral seem to be the colors of choice that have grabbed attention for Summer 2011. Having one piece of these colors whether it’s a pair of earrings a chunky ring or a long necklace will turn your canvas into new painting and you will feel like a million dollars.


The talk of being minimal is for some that is a different conversation and certainly not for all. But MOST women who want to feel special so here you have many options to think about.


Congratulations are in order for Anne B accessories to have been chosen to have her collections in Bellissima. This will please a loyal customer who might be with a friend wanting to buy a great “make a statement” with that perfect WOW piece.

Anne Bosman - Bellissima runs generations deep

I first heard about Anne by a complete accident. My boyfriend's friend from high school happens to be closely affiliated with Alberta Fashion Week and as a result we get to mingle and cross paths from time to time. She knew I wrote for the Bellissima blog and mentioned that her grandmother was employed by the company. I have been wanting to do an employee profile section on the blog for quite some time, but limited by time have yet to get around to it. Anne, however, was quite special: running 28 years, her employment is one of the longest if not THE longest run with the company. The most admirable? At 81 years old she is only now ready to take some time and focus on herself. This is my attempt to convey to all of you the hard work, dedication and amazing personality that is Anne Bosman.

Going down memory lane, Anne reminisces about her first Bellissima Manager, Sophia. At 54 she was in search of a job, as a stay at home mum, the world of fashion excited her, she was ready to leave the nest, so to speak. When I speak with Anne there isn't much that makes us different, the love of clothes, and style itself transcends generations, and in Anne's case it has proven to be quite true. Fast forward 24 years and you see Anne's granddaughter Jacqueline completing the circle and helping organize Bellissima's first Alberta Fashion Week fashion show. It's quite amazing when you think about it, none of it was planned, all these women found their way towards Bellissima on their own terms.

Anne remembers some of the prominent Bellissima locations to be Serena stores, something my young eye for fashion doesn't even remember. It is a great pleasure speaking with Mrs. Bosman, the stories and her points of view are refreshing, enthusiastic and more than anything, inspired. Today's world of retail is not the same as it was 20, even 10 years ago, globalization changed the way we make business, and so Anne's observations are quite valid when she points out the reason she loved working for Bellissima through all these years: the interactions between customers and the sales team as well as among the employees themselves. The atmosphere is tight knit, very family friendly, she says.

As for her personal favourite experiences she singles out selling in the top spot. To Anne it wasn't about forced sales, but about establishing relationships. When bridesmaids came into the store in search for the perfect dress is when Anne felt most accomplished. Cruise season is her favourite time of year to watch for new pieces for her wardrobe, and of course the husbands accompanying the wives while shopping always provide for a lighter atmosphere, it's their view of fashion she finds unique, and at times mildly entertaining.

After talking about the Bellissima customer, Anne believes that they have gotten younger, even Jacqueline found herself a stunner to wear to her high school graduation, and indeed upon walking into a Bellissima store you know you can find something for that special occasion. The diversity, however is what keeps the brand current. Bellissima, in Anne's eyes is an every season shop, customers who bought something for work will come again and buy something for a wedding or a party. Anne's biggest sale to date? $2,700, and it took the whole shift to get there. This kind of personalized shopping experience is what attracts the customer, after all Bellissima originated on the principal of close and personalized relationships. Before the age of the computers, the sales associates were expected to go home and call their customers on their own time and inform them of selections they might be interested in. This, overtime, has translated to our mailing lists and customer loyalty programs that offer discounts and special promotions. As far as getting adjusted to the computers? Anne was never interested in that, she would be encouraged to stay on the floor and leave ringing though the final purchase to somebody else.

Anne has seen many changes over almost 3 decades with the Bellissima brand, one thing for sure stays the same, the quality and the brand promise to exceed all your expectations. Anne has gone a far distance from the girl with ten siblings, from a Saskatchewan Farm, where clothes and fashion were not an accessible commodity to a brand staple and a woman who inspires us all, and most importantly inspires our love of fashion.

'Woke up this morning feeling fine', blue sky and 80 degrees, WONDERFUL, vitamin D will kick in really quickly. We have survived the harshest winter in years and did spring really happen? Now it is June and I am eager to receive my Bellissima box encompassing what I have been gazing at for weeks on end through New York’s finest window displays. All baring a theme of WHITE. Intricate lace, crochet short dresses, white linen shorts paired with sexy shear tops, the wide leg trouser, slim leg pant there are options for everyone. Dolche and Gabanna white lace separates with splashes of YELLOW as a lining has stayed in my mind for my own color statement as I love all the bright colors to wear as an accessory.

In my Bellissima Box there are several items I splurged on that I could easily wear today, the marvellous. White Jacket with the crochet back, I know I will have this investment piece for years, Glad, I decided to buy the matching pant with just a touch of the crochet on the side pockets, I had wondered with our other purchases in white should I own the pant but for my lifestyle I would regret not having this ensemble.

Perfect, for a business meetings, I know I will make so much use of the pant just with some of the jersey tops purchased from Bellissima this Spring. This knockout jacket I am talking about was bought during our Paris trip at the same time marvelous white open neck crochet long tunic which is in my awaited box, this will be my cooler day piece to wear or I will save it for an evening barbecue in the country. Last but not least, are the two white dresses that I purchased from Bellissima’s summer collection The Maxi long cotton and lace with tiers is such a flirty yet perfectly practical item dress for me to have decided on. The accompanying dress is so simple and practical but it almost did not make the box because I thought I had overspent my budget. The fuller skirt and bra friendly bodice was so appealing with the retail prices so terrific how could I give up such a deal?

These white pieces have now become a canvas for my summer wardrobe statement, my floppy hats await me the shoe options excite me whether it’s high wedges in black ,tan or nude , strappy stilettos in bold color or ballet flats in metallic I have my look covered.

Strolling around English Bay on a sunny morning! I love this tunic, it’s the modest girl’s answer to Dolce & Gabbana’s eyelet ensembles. Today feels like a real Vancouver spring day, so of course I wanted to wear sunny, bright colours like dandelion yellow and gold.

Dontcha just love an easy tunic? Ladies, I know you’re pickin up what I’m puttin down here, it’s the easiest thing to wear after a big breakfast and a couple mimosas, no? Forgiving and glam! Loves it. I’ve been asked a number of times where I shop, the answer is everywhere and anywhere. I believe style is innate, as long as you understand the silhouette and fabrications that are on trend, flattering and to your taste. I did a tour around the South Granville Vancouver location of Bellissima last Friday and was inspired by the selection – see my last post! I had the misconception that the clothes were geared mostly towards a more mature woman, but I sure found some pieces I want! Do you have one favourite store or do you shop around as well?

The New York City Easter Parade has been an annual tradition since Civil War days and features marchers in elaborate Easter finery, including some of the fanciest Easter bonnets imaginable.

Hundreds of New Yorkers on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011 stepped out dressed in their finery planned months ahead for a grand Easter parade down Fifth Avenue starting at St. Patricks Cathedral.

What I was expecting was a procession of extremely fancy men and women stepping out of St. Patricks Cathedral. The women were clad in exquisite designs with a dashing man accompanying her in his formal attire. In this era, even with so many streets closed, my intent was to watch and capture this New York tradition and of course take a close glimpse of Bonnets, Fascinators and the imaginative ensembles of families who have kept this tradition for decades. Looking at all the hats, I realized this group I was taking a picture of was in fact a New York Milliner with her entourage surrounding her wearing Fab Hats and Fascinators. What made me smile was two of the girls gave me their business card. I laughed thinking New Yorkers always creative in peddling their wares.

The weather was vibrant and with my imagination full of stories, I headed towards the Church. I doubted I would not see any highly polished carriages, and thought perhaps would catch family pets dressed in small bonnets, or even tamed snakes with a colorful bow. What I saw were remnants of the past. Gone were the themes of current events. There was no hat tilted to the side which was a sinking Titanic, no Silver Cross Prams and babies in lace, organza and velvet with nanny’s in their frilly bonnet and the proud parents dressed to the nines walking behind. Maybe it’s a gone era, maybe the Easter Parade is a free spirited display and example of the world we live in today. Yes, the early 20th century is long gone but here I am in this magical city New York which is now my home. Suddenly I am dancing to the ragtime music, wishing I were in a silk skirt so that I could jitterbug, and taking note minute by minute, as I watch the ladies stroll by dressed up in thrift shop findings.

Obviously, it was time to go and sit in Central Park to meet up with my hubby think about next year dressing myself and a few special friends in wonderful styled regalia fit for a Queen. As I ran down 5th Avenue, I thought of finding a Turner classic movie to watch called The Easter Parade with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire now it all made sense. I remembered the verse, “In your Easter Bonnet with all the frills upon it you’ll be the finest lady in the Easter Parade.

Dressed in what I would think Coco Chanel would wear today, I felt so ready to board a plane to the glamorous streets of Cannes, France!

I love the shape and style of this blouse; it’s so feminine and highlights just the right spots: neckline, waist and arms. Perfect for a chic summer evening. These high-waisted trousers are made out of the most comfortable and forgiving fabric, making them perfect for travel. No more low-rise for this girl, I’m officially converted! Accessories make the look, so I’ve topped my outfit with a vintage snakeskin purse, Grace Kelly-esque sunnies, a large diamante ring (similar to the style of the Chanel camellia), and a pair of prized Chanel platforms. A simple chignon and a slick of dark pink gloss complete my look. Exetera blouse and Frank Lyman pants both from Bellissima.

Bellissima, the gracious leading sponsor of Alberta Fashion Week have re-branded themselves to bring something different to shoppers and the results have created quite the stir. The crowd loved the new edginess and rawness added to the Bellissima mix.

Black was the colour of choice for outfits but the cuts, colour and patterns made each piece it’s own. The red hot, front side zip leather jacket paired with black jeans was the winning piece. By simply adding a staple leather jacket in a bright colour can really add some spice to one’s style palette.

The breezy one-piece jumper has made its come back and fashionable is the only word to truly describe it.

As for dresses, Bellissima took the tender loving approach, comfortable and sexy. A black and sleeveless dress with a silver zipper in the front and pockets on the side; was worn over black leggings which made for a great combination. For ladies wanting to show off their gorgeous legs for the summer time, there were several stunning pieces to choose from: the flashy one-shouldered flowy red dress, the classic black and white horizontal striped dress broken apart with a solid black strip on the front and how can we forget the funky sand-coloured dress with black and white stripes on both sides, with a touch of orange for pop.

If you ever watched Saturday Night Live (SNL) you will know Tina Fey as the hilarious anchor of the Weekend Update (2000-2006), fast forward a couple of years and she has become the creator of one of the funniest and most successful shows on television. 30 Rock has acquired a cult following and earned itself many prestigious awards including the Emmy in 2007 for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Bossypants is a hilarious memoir style read where the author takes us through her experiences in standup and her progression into television, she spares herself at no expense, seeing humour in every aspect of life. As a mother she shares her personal take on the truth of parenting and as a woman objectively analyzes her ups and downs. This is a great read not only for those recently familiar with Fey's work but for all of those interested in modern comedy. I saw this book among gift ideas for father's day in the bookstore, but this book knows no gender. Both males and females will find it equally entertaining. This is a perfect summer read, it is light, perceptive and definitely worth a laugh or two.

It all started with Anna Wintour and those dark, shady glasses. That fierce, tight-lipped expression and her ice cold demeanor. With Anna, an obsession with the women behind the pages of our favorite glossies was born. As of the past few years, thanks to social media and the rise of fashion blogs, we are now privy to the daily musings of the world’s most elite fashion editors, like one of my personal favorites, Elle Magazine’s Kate Lanphear.

Kate exudes a coolness that seems untouchable, likely to do with all that leather and those tough spiked bracelets. This look really isn’t as hard to pull of as it looks, all you need are a good pair of leather pants and a leather jacket, a few spike-adorned bracelets, a dark pair of Ray Bans and of course high heels, and you’re set. I mean fierce!

These pieces hit all the right notes; they’re fitted and figure flattering, a little tough looking and oh-so versatile when worked in with other pieces. The jacket would be fantastic over a simple white tank and boot cut jeans, or pair the pants with a loose silk blouse for a more casual day or evening style. Just be sure to finish off your look with a little attitude – confidence is key. So is a good strut.

Summer Weddings are Just Around the Corner

The scenario: That dear friend’s daughter’s wedding has just crept up and you’ve completely forgotten about what to wear. Naturally, you have a beautiful card picked out and a gift neatly wrapped lying ready to be given, but no dress for yourself.

I’ve been in that situation before, and it is not fun. (The last time it happened to me I was in such a state of frustration over the lack of wedding-appropriate attire, I ended up wearing a rather fitted, fire-engine-red number. Completely inappropriate for a wedding – I stood out, but not quite in the way I had intended.) Better luck this summer, I suppose. But we here at Bellissima will not let that happen to you!

I present to you a beautiful dress option that can take you from weddings to dinners out to work functions (perhaps with a little cardigan over top).

This dress is perfect for a few reasons:

1- The flattering neckline, shaped by those well-placed straps that are wide enough to conceal bra straps. (That’s actually two reasons.)

2- The length. No matter what age, I think a knee-length dress is very feminine and appropriate, not to mention flattering.

3- Notice the rouching around the hips, incredibly flattering, particularly for the tummy, hip and bottom areas.

And how fabulous is the colour? Who doesn’t look good in cobalt blue? Oooh, and the accessorizing options… The joys of being a woman!

May Showers Bring (Fashion) Flowers

It's May and Spring is now here. I hope these showers aren't keeping you indoors and instead you're out seeing and trying on the latest fashion trends. Like every Spring, florals are back and making a HUGE statement. This year you must be noticing the new styles along with these florals. One of the hottest dresses on the runway this season was Stella McCartney's dress in botanical florals.

Whether it's a short sheath with hydrangeas or a long maxi dress splashed from chest to ankle with poppies, or something drape-y, you are guaranteed to find something that suits your body shape. A pastel border or a print on a white background. Wear it full waisted, tight in the waist with a floral print bottom, or as a long chiffon dress in a tropical print. You will surprise yourself with how updated you look and feel in this traditional style. You will be even more surprised when you see the price tag. My love of flowers stems from seeing so many wonderful English gardens. This love has brought me once again to Macy's on 34th street. Every year, they showcase the Macy's Flower Show in NEW YORK CITY with brilliant arrangements from some of America's distinguished floral designers who are featured daily. From March 27-April 10, the aisles of Macy's were themed as different types of gardens. Japanese, tropical, and desert styled gardens blossomed throughout the store, and filled the walls with their aroma. Being around so many wonderful bouquets of flowers and their marvelous scents, I was inspired to write this blog for you. Whether or not you're surrounded by a garden of flowers, hopefully the spring weather is enough to inspire you to try this wonderful look.

Perhaps you are one of those women who could never imagine herself in anything floral. Well, time to sprout out of that bad habit and try something different. I would argue that one of the best movies made, from a fashion-lovers’ point of view, is the 1960s murder-mystery-romance classic Charade starring the gorgeously witty Cary Grant and ever so stylish Audrey Hepburn. This film features a Givenchy-clad Hepburn (think leopard pill-box hats, red wool coats and slender sheaths), as she parades around Paris. That in itself is reason enough to spend a couple hours curled up on the couch, popcorn in hand, in front of the TV. For when the weather does turn up, I adore the style of this LBD, a look right from the film.

The clean, fitted silhouette, feminine neckline detail and modest hem length all contribute to the Audrey factor. Pair with a lovely light pink lipstick, an easy up-do and your favorite neutral pumps and voila! Style a la Hepburn! (Oh, and don’t forget the most important accessory: that charmer Cary Grant. * Sigh *, if only we could all have one of those!)

Many women do it with solitary beauty marks, but would you fake some freckles? Chloe S/S 2011 makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury thinks it's a good idea. They gave all the girls in the show that sun kissed glow. We think we must try this at least once.

From Into The Gloss: Tilbury used MAC lip pencils in Cork andStone to dot them on one by one. She referenced Anita Pallenberg and music festivals, and the girls did have that free-spirited, slightly rock-chick look, especially with their cakey, jet black top-and-bottom lashes.

Love them or hate them the Royal Wedding WILL be the wedding of a generation. It is to quite elaborate lengths that this event has gone, and it's not only people in England that get to participate, thanks to social media the whole world will be watching. If you haven't yet set your channels to the Royal Wedding you can still tune into YouTube where they will be broadcasting live from the procession and the ceremonies, if you are early you can even upload a video message for the happy couple. Carole will be amidst all the commotion. We wish she had a twitter account to update us all on the things to come (hint hint ;) ). Hello fashion lovers! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Olivia Lovenmark and I am a fashion (obsessed) blogger writing to you from the gorgeous city of Vancouver. I will be a contributing writer for the Bellisima blog and I hope to bring you a fresh and witty take on style, making it approachable and fun. (Where else have I heard a line like that? Oh yeah, that’s what all fashion writers say. But it really is my mandate to provide a take on fashion that is easy and delivers a smile!)

I know, I know, less talk, more fashion.

An aspect of dressing that majorly appeals to me: the ability to balance a sartorially fresh look with class and modesty. I think for women this is much harder done than said. One woman who gets it right every time is Olivia Palermo, the much talked-about New York City socialite who could make a paper bag look chic. Featured below is her take on the tweed jacket - a fashion staple that continues to stand the test of time and trends.

I’ve been coveting such a jacket for some time now with no luck finding just the right one, until I discovered this fabulous version from Bellisima:

Dress it up with an LBD (little black dress), or down with jeans like the model has here. Personally, I think I’d throw it over a loose, silk blouse and a pair of wide-leg jeans. Add a pair of killer platform heels and a long chain necklace and you have it, the recipe for 'fabulosity'.

The Royal Treatment

I have a dilemma...

Words cannot express how excited I am for this wonderful celebration. If you are as excited as I am, you must be planning on where you will be on that late April morning. Will I be one of the chosen few to be in West Minster Abbey gazing upon the beautiful couple as they exchange their vows? Will I be in England, in my family’s living room, surrounded by the youngsters who will wish to grow up and be a real princess? If my invite to the wedding doesn’t arrive, perhaps I will be on a rooftop in NYC with my dearest friends, early in the morning with the British flag in one hand and my favorite English cocktail Pimms in the other, celebrating with glass after glass. Or maybe I will simply stay put in my apartment in Manhattan, with my husband, having a delicious British breakfast complete with our English China, and of course a few glasses of Pimms!

Wherever I end up on April 29th, and I promise to let you know where that is, one thing I know for sure: I will be wearing waterproof mascara, as I laugh, cry, and rejoice in this historical celebration.
